"There Are Lines", alternatively "Don't Cross That Line", is a song in Death Note: The Musical.
Overview[]
After L's broadcast in which he used Lind L. Tailor, Soichiro Yagami visits his son Light. They discuss L, the investigation, and what occurred. Soichiro condemns the sacrifice of Tailor's life with this song, saying that L crossed a line. Light joins in, saying that he understands and he follows his father's example.
English version[]
The song was originally written in English. The original English title of the song is "There Are Lines".[1]
On October 30, 2017, script-writer Ivan Menchell shared the English lyrics when fans asked him on Twitter.[2] The demo recording, featuring Michael Lanning as Soichiro and Jeremy Jordan as Light, was later leaked along with the rest of the New York concept album.
English lyrics
[Soichiro]
There are lines that can't be crossed
There are things you shouldn't do
For you pay too high a cost
And you lose a piece of you
You don't justify the means
In the service of an end
Smashing laws to smithereens
'Til there aren't any
Rules left to break or mend
Set a thief to catch a thief
Trap a liar with a lie
But don't traffic in this grief
In the name of eye for eye
Nothing wrong can turn out right
By saying wrong's all right to do
Men of principle must fight
So the truth that's in
the man that you are stays true
You don't kill someone
As a substitute
You don't load a gun,
Close your eyes, and shoot
You don't kill a man
Just to buy a clue
This is not a plan
Lawmen can pursue
[Light]
Father, you know that I feel as you do
For these lessons I learned at your knee
And I think maybe by working with you
Helping you will be helpful for me
[Light/Soichiro]
You don't kill someone
As a substitute
You don't load a gun,
Close your eyes, and shoot
[Soichiro]
You don't kill a man
Just to read the signs
[Light]
That's no better than
Bad that good defines
[Soichiro]
Never cross these lines
[Light]
Never cross these lines
[Soichiro/Light]
Never cross these lines
