Jump Ryu! (ジャンプ流!) is an illustration box series that was released biweekly throughout 2016. Each of the 25 volumes focuses on a Weekly Shonen Jump manga creator. Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata were featured in Jump Ryu! Vol. 19 for the series Death Note and Bakuman and were one of only two author and artist combinations to be featured.
Contents[]
Each Jump Ryu! volume includes a roughly 20-page booklet, manga board replica, printed illustrations and an autograph, and a DVD with how-to draw footage and instructions from the manga artist. The booklet is divided into four parts: a section titled ROAD to JUMP with information on the creators' debuts; a section of pointers and tips from the creators; a section of manga panels reprinted from the original magazines with tracing paper for practice; and a section titled "manga iroha," or the "ABCs of Jump! manga," a step-by-step guide to the basic techniques of manga illustration with a different focus in each issue.
The booklet included in volume 19 features interviews with Ohba and Obata about their creative processes and their individual histories as manga creators, as well as reprints of Platinum End manga panels to use for tracing and practice. The DVD includes footage of Obata's work space and his illustrative process, where he is shown using various mediums to create a piece of Death Note artwork that was used as a promotional piece for the 2016 film Death Note: Light Up the NEW World.
While the volume is out of print, it is still for sale in new condition in various JUMP character goods shops across Japan. It retails for 1290 yen.
