“The war took my family. I want to rid the world of war.” |
Jeffrey Miller (ジェフリー・ミラー, Jefurī Mirā) is a character from the Death Note DS game L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap.
Appearance[]
Jeffrey is a young man, estimated by L to be 26–27. His face is somewhat gaunt, he has light brown eyes, and an overall somewhat disheveled appearance. His medium brown hair issomewhat shaggy, his jaw is lined with stubble, and his clothing is unkempt. He wears glasses, a gray shirt with a loose black tie, brown pants, and a wrinkled white lab coat.
History[]
Kirilo Milanović grew up in the former country of Yugoslavia. During the Yugoslav Wars, he lost his family after they were killed by a bomb developed by an arms company known as the Combat Logistics Network (CLN). Upon becoming orphaned, the young Kirilo was rescued by a charity known as the Alois Foundation, which presumably relocated him to England. Kirilo had become staunchly anti-war because of his loss, and after his rescue stated that war had taken his family, and so he wished to rid the world of war. It is unclear when he started going by Jeffrey Miller, but it can be assumed he changed his given name and anglicized his family name after becoming an English citizen. Despite his time spent in England, he has a noticeable southern Slavic accent.
Plot[]
(The conclusion of the plot is based on the True Ending of the game. Player decisions may vary the outcome on their playthrough.)
Three years prior to the events of the game, Jeffrey, now a skilled programmer, was approached by Alois Bateson, founder of the organization that saved him. Alois, aware of Jeffrey’s talent, recruited Jeffrey, who felt indebted to Alois. Shortly after, Jeffrey became aware that Alois was a shareholder of the CLN whose goal was to use Jeffrey as part of a larger plan to create and market new explosives. Upon learning this, Jeffrey’s plans changed from helping Alois to getting revenge upon the CLN.
Jeffrey is the first of the antagonists to appear during the game. After the kidnapped FBI agent, with the help of L, manages to get passed all of the traps on the first floor of the Grenada, L comes to the conclusion that they are being watched, then calls out that whoever is watching them can show themselves. Jeffrey—going by the alias “J”—reveals himself to the two via PDA and claims that he a member of the terrorist organization Criella Moon, which was defeated with the help of L a year prior. He claims his motive is revenge, but L is suspicious of his claims from the very beginning. Jeffrey appears several times throughout the beginning of the game to speak to L and the agent, continuing to lie about the motives behind the kidnapping, involvement of L, and trapped floors.
L eventually realizes the traps are made by an infamous bomb maker known as Housekeeper. Thereafter, Housekeeper takes over Jeffrey’s role of speaking to L and the agent.
L and the Agent eventually discover that the kidnapping and traps are all part of an elaborate plan by the CLN to test out new explosives and then sell them to the public, marketing them as having been tested by the famous detective, L. Jeffrey appears again towards the end of the story, after Alois reveals himself to L and the Agent. Jeffrey seemingly has a change of heart and decides to help L and the Agent stop Alois by disarming the ship. However, as L and the Agent get farther along, Alois continuously insists that they contact the US Military and have them shoot down the ship. L is eventually able to put together Jeffrey’s identity and true motives. L convinces Jeffrey that his plans go against the peace he has always desired, and Jeffrey agrees to help L and the Agent. He manages to assist L and the Agent and ultimately subdues Housekeeper when he attempts to flee.
With his and Housekeeper’s testimonies, as well as the evidence found on the Granada, charges against Alois are able to stick.
While Jeffrey states that he does not regret helping, he expresses some contempt for L for choosing to take on small criminal cases instead of cases that, if solved, could have positive impacts on large-scale conflicts and war.
Trivia[]
- Given the timeline of the Yugoslav Wars, Jeffrey was likely in his teens when the war began and he became orphaned.
