A Japanese-language production of Death Note: The Musical ran from January 20 to February 23, 2020 in Japan, beginning at the Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall (Toshima Arts Culture Theater) in Tokyo. It was the third Japanese-language production of Death Note: The Musical after the 2015 and 2017 productions, and it is the fifth production of the musical in any language.

In January 2019, HoriPro officially announced a new production in January 2020 with an all new cast, and they put out a nationwide open casting call for the lead role of Light Yagami.[1] The 2020 performance would begin at the Toshima Ward Arts & Culture Theater (豊島区立芸術文化劇場) and then move south and concluded its tour with a final three-day performance in Fukuoka from March 6 to 8.[2][3]

On February 26, 2020, the production was closed early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 Japanese production had an all-new main cast. Park Hye Na, who portrayed Rem in both the 2015 and 2017 South Korean productions, returns to the role with the Japanese cast.

The production was initially scheduled to run through March, but ended in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last performance was February 23, 2020 in Shizuka. On February 26, the Japanese government released restriction guidelines for COVID-19, and the upcoming performances in Osaka and Fukoka were cancelled.[4][5][6]
