Alois Bateson (アイロス・ベイトソン) is a businessman and the main antagonist of the Death Note video game L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap.
Appearance[]
Bateson is a middle-aged Caucasian man. He is wrinkled, marking his older age, and has slicked-back brown hair and dark eyes.
History[]
Bateson is the founder and sole proprietor of North American IT company Reboot, Inc. He is also a shareholder in multiple companies via the investment fund Shuei Finance. One such company includes the multinational munitions company Combat Logistics Network (CLN), though this is not public knowledge. Bateson is described in his codex entry as “business-minded and ambitious.”
In addition to his work as a businessman, Bateson created a charity twenty years prior to the events of the game known as the Alois Foundation, though some speculate that it was founded simply to make Bateson look less greedy.
Plot[]
(The conclusion of the plot is based on the True Ending of the game. Player decisions may vary the outcome of their playthrough.)
In the early 2000s, the director of the CLN becomes ill and announces his retirement. Bateson, a shareholder in the company, comes up with an elaborate plan to secure his place as the CLN’s next director, believing his plan will guarantee he beat his rivals to the position.
Bateson hires an infamous bomb creator known as the Housekeeper to create complex bombs for his company. Wanting these bombs to be tested by the best of the best, Bateson concocts a complex plan to have L, the most successful detective in the world, indirectly test his products. L had helped the Federal Bureau of Investigation take down a criminal organization known as Criella Moon a year prior, so Bateson decides to use the organization as a cover.
Bateson has his people trick the FBI into believing that Criella Moon had returned and had set up a base in a warehouse in Key West, Florida. The FBI took the bait and sent one of their agents who had been involved with the previous case, as well as an additional agent (Naomi Misora or Raye Penber) as backup. While there, the Agent is knocked out and kidnapped.
The Agent had been taken to a cruise ship known as the Granada (purchased through Reboot, Inc.), which was reprogrammed by one Jeffrey Miller. The cruise ship is disguised as a hotel located in the nation of Criella in order to throw L and the Agent off and reinforce the ruse that Criella Moon is behind the deed. In exchange for the Agent being held hostage’s safe return, Bateson has his people demand that L be the hostage negotiator, allowing him to get in contact with the Agent via PDA. Miller watches the Agent go throughout the ship and disarm traps, all while taking data on the “experiment.” However, L is able to eventually solve the case, and Bateson reveals himself via PDA, confirming L’s suspicions and revealing his plans to market the anti-personnel traps as having been developed by world-famous detective L, even planning to dub it the L Model.
Despite Bateson’s efforts, L, the Agent, and a persuaded Jeffrey manage to get the best of Bateson. He is arrested, and the CLN eventually collapses.
Bateson ultimately manages to make bail. However, several years later, he dies of a heart attack, most likely the work of Kira.
