Tämä muistikirja kuuluu ihmisten maailmaan siitä hetkestä, kun se koskettaa maata ihmisten maailmassa. (engl. The note shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground of (arrives in) the human world.)
Muistikirjan omistaja pystyy tunnistamaan sen entisen omistajan, eli shinigamin, hahmon ja äänen. (engl. The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of the original owner, i.e. a god of death.)
Ihminen, joka käyttää tätä muistikirjaa, ei voi mennä niin taivaaseen kuin helvettiinkään. (engl. The human who uses the notebook can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.)
Jos kuolinaika kirjoitetaan 40 sekunnin sisällä sydänkohtauksen kirjoittamisesta kuolinsyyksi, kuolinaikaa voidaan manipuloida. Kuolinaika voi myös olla 40 sekuntia nimen kirjoittamisesta. (engl. Jos kirjoittaa "kuolee sairauteen", mutta ei määritä sairautta vaan pelkästään kuolinajan, henkilö kuolee sopivaan sairauteen. Mutta Death Note toimii ihmiskalenterin mukaan vain 23 päivän sisällä. (engl. If you write, die of disease for the cause of death, but only write a specific time of death without the actual name of disease, the human will die from an adequate disease. But the Death Note can only operate within 23 days (in the human calendar). This is called the 23 day rule.)
Kun kirjoittaa "kuolee sairauteen" määrittelemättä sairautta, jos sairauteen kuolemiseen kuluu kauemmin kuin 24 päivää, 23-päivän sääntö ei päde ja henkilö kuolee sairauteen sopivan ajan kuluttua. Jos joku omistaa vähintään kaksi Death Notea ja kirjoittaa yhteen niistä henkilön nimen ja toiseen kuolinajan ja kuoleman olosuhteet ajatellen koko ajan kyseisen henkilön kasvoja, henkilö kuolee kirjoitusten mukaan. Jos kuolinsyy ja kuoleman olosuhteet kirjoitetaan ennen nimen kirjoittamista, nimiä voi kirjoittaa kuinka monta hyvänsä, kunhan ne kirjoitetaan 40 sekunnin sisällä, eikä kuolinsyy ja kuoleman olosuhteet ole mahdottomia. (engl. In occasions where the cause and situation of death is written before the victim's name, multiple names can be written as long as they are written within 40 seconds and the causes and situations of death are not impossible to occur.)
Jos joukossa on henkilöitä, joille kuolinsyy on mahdollinen, mutta olosuhteet mahdottomat, ainoastaan kuolinsyy pitää. Kun kukaan ei omista muistikirjaa eikä kenenkään ole tarpeen olla kiinnittynyt. (engl. If nobody claims the ownership of the Death Note, and it is unnecessary to haunt anyone.)
Kun muistikirjaan kiinnittynyt shinigami vaihtuu syystä tai toisesta toiseksi. (engl. If, for any reason, the god of death possessing the Death Note has been replaced by another god of death.)
Kun shinigami ei tiedä, missä muistikirja on, kuka sen omistaa tai missä omistaja on, hän voi selvittää sen katsomalla aukosta shinigamien valtakunnassa. (engl. When the god of death loses track of the Death Note which he/she possesses, cannot identify which human is owning the Death Note, or cannot locate where the owner is, and therefore needs to find such information through the hole in the world of gods of death.)
